This is important.
While I, like the Candor, believe that honesty is extremelly important, and that society's habit of lying to make people happy is indeed the downfall of us all (okay guys I just referenced a song by ADTR, if you've heard it, AWESOME), I also recognize that sometimes there IS such a thing as too much honesty.
***on a side note: Dumbledore says this in regards to Harry's past and future, and he later regrets not telling him everything (see books 5 & 6)
People. If someone asks you if they look good in a shirt they're about to buy and they DON'T: TELL. THEM. They probably already think the same thing! If you tell them they do, and they disagree, they'll start doubting your integrity. If someone asks you if you did in fact tag their fence with profanity last night... Well, if you think they WONT call the police, by all means, TELL THEM. Or not. I mean, I probably wouldn't... but then again I'm not exactly a shining saint for comparison either.
Try to always tell the truth when it comes to the little things. The asic things. Be honest in every day interactions. Hold yourself accountable.
But. That type of honesty is not really what we're discussing.
We are reffering to truths that can wound a person. Truths that can reveal too much. Some forms of honesty can cause such irreperable damage that the cost of telling the truth can be... well... unimaginable. However, at the same time, sometimes holding back painful facts can cause more damage later than they would have had they been told sooner.
I can't give you any sage words of discriminatory advice pertaining to the what where's and how's of distinguishing between a truth that should be told immediately and one that should be held back.
But consider the consequences of both. In all situations. And remember: a small truth is a beautiful thing. A large truth can cause just as much pain as relief. But the longer you wait on a large truth, the more you risk making that pain even deeper.
Stay thirsty my friends, and may the odds be ever in your favor.
