I almost didn't catch this little gem. Loads of Dumbledore's most genius quotes are hidden amongst more general lines, in places where they aren't even the main event. I had turned several pages before what I'd read finally hit me, and I had to go back and copy it down.
The idea of numbing emotional pain is nothing new, especially to our generation. We are basically the generation of depressed, insomniatic, stress disorder encumbered individuals. But, for our purposes, none of these things are REALLY what we need to look at. You see, clinical depression is not a choice.
However, this is different altogether.. Dumbledore is talking about the CHOICE to numb the emotional pain of traumatic events, and how, in the end, it does nothing for you.
Guys. Everyone knows what it's like to tell yourself to "toughen up". Millions of people use medicine, illicit drugs, alcohol, and/or tobacco to separate themselves, to one extent or another, from the pain of their own lives. But no matter what you do, no matter what distractions you use, it doesn't actually go away. In the end, you still have to face it.
The point Albus is making here is this: Do not avoid the pain heading your way. The longer you put it off, the worse it will be. We don't let our wounds fester and become infected, do we? So why allow yourself to do this on an emotional scale? It has been proven time and time again; the sooner you face it, whether that means writing it down, talking to someone about it, or just thinking it through, start to finish; the sooner you can recover.
Babes, if there's anything, anything at all, that you've been afraid to face, don't be afraid. You are stronger than you know. And if you need someone to be there, with you, through it all. That's what I'm here for. You just have to ask.

Okay, now for a brief aside, I was watching "Flight of the Pheonix" for the first time in like a century the other night (It's a movie about a plane that crash lands in the middle of the desert) and GUESS WHO I SAW OMG I WAS LIKE WHAAAAAT????
